Viewing Events in EarthRanger Mobile

With EarthRanger Mobile 2.9.0, users with the necessary permissions can now view shared events directly in the events list and on the map. This update enhances situational awareness by allowing teams to see event data collected by other users or devices in your operational area.

What Are Shared Events?

Shared events are events recorded in EarthRanger that are created by other users, or triggered by external sources or movement patterns. They are stored on the server and are now available to view in a read-only format within the app. These events may include critical information about incidents, observations, and activities captured by other users or devices in your organization.

Shared events are different from local events, which are those created and saved on your device.

How Shared Events Appear in the App

  • Shared events are displayed in the Events List alongside Events recorded on your own device.
  • On the Map, shared events appear as markers, just like any other Event.
  • Shared Events are read-only—you can view their details but cannot edit or update them.
  • Visibility of shared events depends on your user permissions.

Opting In or Out of Viewing Shared Events

Shared events are an optional feature that you can choose to turn on or off, depending on how you work in the field. This gives you more control over what appears in your app, while still respecting the permissions set by your administrator.

If you opt in, you will download all the shared events you have access to, giving you a more complete picture of what’s happening in your operational area.

If you opt out, you will only see events created on your device. This can help reduce the time it takes for the app to start up.

You can manage this setting in the app’s configuration, or check with your administrator to find out how it’s been set up for your device.

Note: Even if Shared Events are enabled in your settings, you still need the correct permissions to see them. Only events you’re authorized to access will appear in your app.

If you are not seeing Shared Events but believe you should, talk to your site administrator. They can confirm whether your device is set to show Shared Events and whether your user permissions allow access.

Why This Matters

Previously, EarthRanger Mobile only displayed Events recorded on the device. Users had to rely on desktop access or direct communication to stay informed about other incidents. Now, teams in the field have access to a more comprehensive and real-time view of activities across their area of operation.

Key Benefits

  • Improved Awareness: Field teams can now see critical events captured by other users and devices.
  • Better Coordination: Respond to incidents more effectively with shared, real-time data.
  • User Control: Choose whether to include shared events based on your workflow needs.
  • Flexible Setup: Organizations can configure this feature to suit their operational requirements.

How to Use This Feature

If your administrator has enabled this feature and your user role includes the necessary permissions, Shared Events will appear automatically in the app once you've opted in.

If you do not see Shared Events and believe you should, contact your administrator to verify whether your app is set to show only local Events and to confirm your access permissions.

This update helps EarthRanger Mobile continue to serve as a powerful and flexible tool for field operations, giving users access to essential data when and where they need it.
