Subject types in EarthRanger classify what a subject represents, such as a vehicle, wildlife, stationary object, or person. Subtypes provide additional specificity, allowing further categorization under a primary type.
Accessing Subject Type Management
To manage subject types:
- Navigate to EarthRanger Administration page.
- Select Observations > Subject Types.
This opens the Subject Types page, where you can view, add, delete, or rename subject types.
Adding a New Subject Type
To add a subject type:
- On the Subject Types page, click Add Subject Type.
- Enter the following:

Subject Type: A descriptive name
(e.g., "Aircraft")

Subject Type Key: A one-word identifier for system reference
(e.g., "aircraft")

Optional Subtypes: Specify subcategories under this type
(e.g., "Helicopter")

In this page you can create subtypes that are associated with the Subject type. This can also be done from the Subtype page (link to header)

- Select Save.
Managing Subject Subtypes
Subject subtypes allow for granular categorization. For example, the subtype "Cheetah" may fall under the type "Wildlife."
Adding a Subject Subtype
- Go to Observations > Subject Sub types page.
- Click Add Subject Subtype and provide:

Subtype Key: A system-friendly identifier
(e.g., "cheetah")

Subtype Description: A user-friendly label
(e.g., "Cheetah")

Subject Type: The Subject type this subtype belongs to
(e.g., "Wildlife")

The Subject Type can be created previous to adding a subtype or add a new one with the green plus icon.

Managing Subject Status
Subject Status provides basic details about a subject and is primarily used for troubleshooting purposes. The following key information is included:
- Map Marker: The icon representing the subject on the map.
- Time of State: The timestamp indicating the last known status update for the subject.
- Age of State: The time elapsed since the subject's state was last updated.
- Subject: The name of the subject.
- Recorded at US/Pacific: The date and time when the subject's location was recorded, shown in the indicated timezone.

Longitude/Latitude: The subject's recorded geographic location

. - Age of Observation: The time elapsed since the observation data was captured.

Source Provider: The organization or service that supplies the data for the subject
(e.g., Savannah Tracking, Vectronics)

Source Type: The category of source providing the data
(e.g., tracking device, GPS radio, camera trap)

To access this feature, navigate to Observations > Subject Status where subject details are displayed.
Viewing Subject Status
On the Subject Status page, you can filter information using the following criteria:
- Radio Status: Options include All, Green, Blue, Red, or Offline.
- Source Type: Filter by the type of data source.
- Subject Subtype: Narrow results by subject subcategories.
