Managing Subject Types and Subtypes in EarthRanger

Subject types in EarthRanger classify what a subject represents, such as a vehicle, wildlife, stationary object, or person. Subtypes provide additional specificity, allowing further categorization under a primary type.

Accessing Subject Type Management

To manage subject types:

  1. Navigate to EarthRanger Administration page.
  2. Select Observations > Subject Types.
This opens the Subject Types page, where you can view, add, delete, or rename subject types.

Adding a New Subject Type

To add a subject type:

  1. On the Subject Types page, click Add Subject Type.
  2. Enter the following:
    1. Subject Type: A descriptive name (e.g., "Aircraft").
    2. Subject Type Key: A one-word identifier for system reference (e.g., "aircraft").
    3. Optional Subtypes: Specify subcategories under this type (e.g., "Helicopter").
In this page you can create subtypes that are associated with the Subject type. This can also be done from the Subtype page (link to header)

Managing Subject Subtypes

Subject subtypes allow for granular categorization. For example, the subtype "Cheetah" may fall under the type "Wildlife."

Adding a Subject Subtype

  2. Click Add Subject Subtype and provide:
    1. Subtype Key: A system-friendly identifier (e.g., "cheetah").
    2. Subtype Description: A user-friendly label (e.g., "Cheetah").
    3. Subject Type: The Subject type this subtype belongs to (e.g., "Wildlife").
The Subject Type can be created previous to adding a subtype or add a new one with the green plus icon
  3. Select Save
