Analyzers

Analyzers in EarthRanger work in the background to watch your incoming data and check whether it meets certain rules.

For example, a geospatial proximity analyzer can alert you when a tracked animal comes near a specific point on the map.

EarthRanger offers two main types of analyzers:

  • Geospatial Analyzers
  • Miscellaneous Analyzers

Geospatial Analyzers

These tools focus on location data and can trigger alerts when certain conditions are met—like when an animal enters a specific area (geofence).

Geofence Analyzers (Geofences)

  • What They Are: Virtual fences drawn on the map (describing a linear boundary in EarthRanger)
  • How They Work: An administrator defines a geofence by marking points on the map and linking this with a subject group (for example, elephants with GPS collars).
  • If a subject crosses the geofence line, the system automatically generates a geofence break Event.
  • Example: A geofence around a community might alert you if a tracked elephant enters the area.

Proximity Analyzers

  • How They Work: Proximity Analyzers detect when subjects in a specific subject group come within a defined distance of a location.
  • Why It Matters: Helps you monitor how close subjects get to a point of interest.

Immobility Analyzers

  • How They Work: Immobility Analyzers monitor the movement of a subject group and trigger an Event (which can be configured to trigger an Alert) if a subject's movement is abnormal (e.g. no movement is detected).
  • Usage: This allows you to be notified if a subject isn’t moving as expected — and can act as a warning that a collared animal might be sick, injured, or dead, or if there is a technical issue with a collar.

Subject Proximity Analyzers

  • How They Work: Subject Proximity Analyzers continuously track how close subjects are to one another using adjustable distance and time settings.
  • Usage: These Analyzers can help prevent 'friendly fire' incidents by alerting when ranger teams are coming into close proximity, or provide researchers with insights into animal behaviour and interactions (e.g. when a male and female of a species come into proximity with one another).

Map Customization Features

Beyond analyzers, EarthRanger lets you customize your map by adding:

  • Points of Interest: Such as rivers, mountains, roads, or important settlements.
  • Boundaries: You can set limits to define areas on the map.
  • Multipolygons: For marking camps, reserve areas, and more.

This flexible setup allows you to tailor the system to the unique needs of your site while ensuring that you receive timely alerts based on the movement and interactions of your tracked subjects. See: Map Features Configuration
