00:01:36 – Data Entry & Permissions (Using EarthRanger Mobile/Web.)
Transcript:
Hello, I'm Dewald and I'm part of the Support Team. Welcome to the Introduction to Event Management. With this model, we'll explore Event Management within the system, including the configuration process of different Event Types. So, after these sets of videos, you should be able to understand how Event Categories fit into the system, be able to create event types using our EarthRanger Data Model template, as well as manage these on the EarthRanger system. Let's get into it with some more details. Let's start off with some definitions first. Event Categories are groupings where similar Event Types or associated Event Types get grouped within. As an example here, we see the Security Event Category and below it various Event Types associated with Security. Similarly, we see the Monitoring Event Category with its associated Event Types. I can open up a new event type by clicking on the “Invasive Species” Event Type as an example. It will open up the Event Type Form where users can enter various data, either from the field using EarthRanger Mobile or on EarthRanger Web. These log events can also be interacted with by users who have the appropriate permissions to see these events.

Let's add a new Event Category.
So I'm on the EarthRanger admin side now. Under the Activity section you will see Event Categories. Select Event Categories to open up this page. Over here I can see all of the active and inactive Event Categories. The display name, the value order number and whether they are active or inactive.
To add a new Event Category, click on the Add Event Category button on the top right hand side of the screen. We can assign order number, this is how far down the list within this grouping this Event Category would be. So, in other words, if I open up Add New Events. Security is our first Event Category. Then we've got WildAid and Marine. So over here, the lower the number the higher up on that Event Type list the Event Category will be.
Let's go ahead and make this ordernum 2. With the ID field, we don't need to make any adjustments there as this field is automatically populated. The value field is a mandatory field as you can see it's in bold. So we need to put some information in there. Remember the value is linked to the database so use lower case lettering and one word. You can use the underscore to join multiple words together.
Active is whether this Event Category will be active, visible or not on the front end or the map. Flag we don't need to make any changes there. It tells us that this was created by a user or a person so we can go ahead and save.
We will then get a message that this Event Category “Rescue Attempt” was added successfully. It's important to note that this newly created “Rescue Attempt” Event Category won’t be visible on the map user interface of EarthRanger yet as there’s not Event Type within this Event Category.
So we can go here, I'm just going to use an existing Event Type and place it under this “Rescue Attempt” Event Category. Let's save it. After making changes on EarthRanger admin, do a refresh on the web interface for those changes to take effect.
We can see our newly created Event Category has been added, and the Accident Event Type is also now within this event category.
Auto-resolve Events
Learn how to enable auto-resolve for automated Event Types in EarthRanger. This quick tutorial walks you through configuring auto-resolve for Events like NASA FIRMS fire detections or Global Forest Watch Alerts, ensuring they transition from ‘Active’ to ‘Resolved’ after a set time.
Key Topics 00:00:05 – Introduction to auto-resolving automated Event Types in EarthRanger. 00:00:25 – How auto-resolve shifts events from "Active" to "Resolved" state. 00:00:40 – Viewing resolved events using the "All" or "Resolved" filter. 00:00:50 – Navigating to Event Types to configure auto-resolve. 00:01:13 – Enabling auto-resolve and setting the timeframe (in hours). 00:01:25 – Best practices for choosing a duration (e.g., ensuring team visibility). 00:01:35 – Saving changes and confirming setup.
Transcript:
If you have Event Types that are automatically generated on your EarthRanger system like the NASA FIRMS fire detection events, or the global forest or the Global Forest Watch fire or deforestation Events. It may be a good idea to put an auto-resolve on those Event Types. An auto-resolve will just change the state of that Event Type from being an Active Event to being a Resolved Event. Meaning it won't be visible by default to the users on the Event display. Only by selecting the Event filter and selecting the All or Resolved state of Events. These event types will be visible. To do this, navigate to Event Types search for your geofence or Global Forest Watch fire Event Type or Deforestation Event Type. If you scroll down you'll see this check box that will allow the Event to automatically resolve after x amount of hours. Make sure to click the check box and here you can select the amount of hours. Please note that the amount of hours selected here needs to be long enough for your personnel to at least take notice of this Event. Should there be any action that's required and save the changes.
Customizing Event Data
In this video, you'll find a detailed walkthrough of how EarthRanger handles Spoor Event Types as an example on how to use the default system fields and customizable options to mapping, data recording, and incident grouping. Whether you're a field operator or data manager, this guide will help you understand how to effectively log and manage spoor sightings and link them with broader incidents like poaching. Ideal for conservationists and organizations using EarthRanger for anti-poaching or wildlife monitoring efforts.

Let's have a look at our default EarthRanger Spoor Event Type and how this data is being laid out in the data model.
We've got an icon associated to this Event Type.
We've got our first four fields that's there by default on all Event Types and that's the reported by who reported this information.
Priority color can be assigned to this Event Type.
And can set the location, I am just going to choose a map location.
If this Spoor Event Type was to be entered using EarthRanger Mobile the location would automatically be taken from the mobile device so no input is needed there as well as the Event Date and time is also automatically populated.
Then the customizable fields start:
With this one we can see that the first field title is Type of spoor, there's an asterisk next to it meaning that’s a mandatory field so some information needs to be put into this field in order for it to be saved successfully on Earth Ranger web. In the case of Earth Ranger mobile it can be saved as a draft but before submitted some information would need to be entered within this field.
If I click on that field we can see there's a dropdown list of choices: footprint, motorbike and vehicle. So I just want to show you how this would look like on our data model.
So we've got our Event Name that is Spoor. Got our first Field, the title.
Field Name is Type of Spoor and it's a list of choices.
The section column is to the left and then there's all choices; footprint, motorbike and vehicle.
And so all of the customizable fields can be laid out on the data model according to the needs of your organization and what type of information is needed to be recorded.
In this example with a Spoor Event.
So EarthRanger supports free text fields, numbers, list of choices, Date/Time, checkboxes and scrolling text.
If we have a look down further on this Event Type with all Event Types there's a note button and if I click on that it opens up a text box where users can add some more information regarding this Spoor Event Type.
So that functionality is there.
We've also have an attachment where one can add images or documents or whatever is relevant to the specific Event Type.
I can also link this Spoor Event with a new Event by clicking on the Event button.
So EarthRanger have the functionality to combine various different Event Types into a single file or docket or what we call in EarthRanger, an Incident.
Here's examples of some Incidents.
As you can see the icon looks a little bit different — it's a file or docket icon.
So if I click on this Elephant Poaching Incident it will show me the various Event Types that have been grouped together.
And we can also see some information that have been recorded on each Event Type from here as well as the date and the time.
We can switch around the order so this Spoor was seen at 9:03 and a shot was heard, Carcass was found, suspect arrested.
And all of these, we believe these are all related and therefore they are grouped together to form an Incident.
There are various ways that incidents can be formed.
Another way is to add this new event type to an already existing Incident.
So I can now add it to one of these existing incidents or I can also add it to a new Incident.
I can also add this Event Type to a patrol if needed.
Or I can print the Event Details.
So perhaps this is important information that needs to be sent on to a colleague or to be used within a monthly report.
So I can save it as a PDF and include it in my monthly report, obviously once the data is in entered.
I can save this Event Type just by clicking on save or I can click on the arrow down to save and resolve.
So resolve just means that it's in a different state and that it will not be visible by default on the Events Feed.
Unless a user searches for Resolved or All states.
So to take you back to that, here's the event feed currently by default the filter is set to only view Active Event Types.
So to view Resolved or All Event Types I can click on the Event Filter and change the state to Resolved Events or to view All events.
So I just clicked on Resolved Events and it's showing me all of the events that have been resolved.
