Analyze Movement and Activity Using Tools in EarthRanger Web

EarthRanger Web provides a suite of interactive tools that help visualize and interpret data more effectively. Whether you're monitoring wildlife movement, evaluating patrol coverage, or identifying incident hotspots, these tools give you the insight needed to make timely, informed decisions in the field.

Tracks

Tracks are generated paths to record the history of where and when a device was at a different location. They can be represented on the map by a line following the tracked subjects and different tracking points.

Seeing the path an animal took or the route a ranger took is hugely helpful in analysis of the landscape and how to protect it.

Time Slider

You can use the Time Slider to view the contents of the Map over a period of time. It appears as an option in the Map Tools. For example, by moving the time slider, you can view the movement of tracked animals over the selected time.

Heat Maps

Heat Maps offer a powerful way to detect patterns in subject movement and report frequency. These color-coded circles appear on the map, changing from violet to red based on the intensity of recorded data.

You can enable Heat Maps through the Map Layers panel or directly via Tracked Subject Properties, applying them individually or in bulk. Customize sensitivity and radius to fine-tune your view based on operational needs. This is especially useful when identifying high-traffic areas or pinpointing incident clusters.

Combining Tools for Deeper Insights

EarthRanger becomes even more powerful when analytical tools are used together. For example:

  • Use the Time Slider to animate subject movement over hours, days, or weeks.
  • Overlay Heat Maps to correlate movement with high-density zones.
  • View Tracks in combination with active Events for contextual understanding.
  • Toggle between layers (e.g., Patrols and Tracked Subjects) to monitor coverage gaps or overlaps.

This multi-layered analysis helps conservation teams identify trends, make data-driven decisions, and improve field coordination.

Looking Ahead: Advanced Filtering Capabilities

As you begin exploring EarthRanger’s analysis tools, you'll soon benefit from advanced filtering options available through the Events Tab and other configuration views. These tools allow you to focus on specific time ranges, subjects, categories, or event types. Refining your data to uncover exactly what you need.

In the next sections, we’ll guide you through using event filters, configurable quicklinks, and external datasets like FIRMS fire reports to maximize your situational awareness.
