This integration requires configurations in the Garmin Portal, Gundi, and EarthRanger. Please contact us at support@earthranger.com and we’ll guide you through the process to ensure everything is set up correctly.

We are actively working to make this integration self-service in the future. Stay tuned for updates!

Prerequisites

Garmin InReach

You will need:

  • Garmin Explore (Garmin Explore™) account.
  • Garmin Professional Subscription.

Gundi

You will need:

EarthRanger

You will need:

  • Admin access to EarthRanger.
  • A special EarthRanger user with permissions to post observation data and messages.
  • A long-lived token for the special user.

Please refer to EarthRanger's documentation or contact Support.

Configurations

A single Route in Gundi carries both directions of this integration:

  • InReach to EarthRanger — locations and messages from the radios reach EarthRanger.
  • EarthRanger to InReach — messages written in EarthRanger are delivered to the radios. This is the arrow that goes back from EarthRanger to InReach on the Route's flow map.
Important: To avoid duplicating subjects in EarthRanger, if the EarthRanger - Garmin InReach integration has already been active through a previous version of Gundi, please contact the dev team before proceeding with this guide.

1. Create the Route in Gundi

1.1 Log in to Gundi and click Create Route.
1.2 Select Garmin InReach.
1.3 Select your Workspace and enter a Route Name (e.g., InReach to ER). Leave all other fields empty and click Next.
1.4 Click Add destination on the flow map and select your EarthRanger site. Please consult our guide.
1.5 On the flow map, click the InReach node and open the Connect → API key section. Copy the API Key; you will use it in the next step.

2. Garmin (Outbound Settings) — radios to EarthRanger

2.1 Log in to https://explore.garmin.com/
2.2 Go to Settings → Portal Connect.
2.3 Turn Outbound Settings ON.
2.4 Set the Outbound Settings URL:

https://hooks.gundiservice.org/webhooks?integration_type=inreach&apikey=[apikey]

Important: replace [apikey] with the API Key you copied from the InReach node's Connect section.

2.5 Click Test.

2.6 Click Save.

You should see a subject with an observation and a message on the EarthRanger site.

3. Garmin (Inbound Settings) — EarthRanger to radios

3.1 In https://explore.garmin.com/, go to Settings → Portal Connect.
3.2 Turn Inbound Settings ON.
3.3 Configure an IPC User Name and IPC Password. These fields can't be left blank.
3.4 Take note of the Inbound URL (Garmin). Example:

4. Enter the Garmin inbound credentials in Gundi

4.1 Back on the Route's flow map, click the InReach node and open Connection Credentials.
4.2 Fill in the fields so they match the IPC Inbound settings from step 3:

inReach Portal Connect (IPC) Inbound API: Inbound URL (Garmin)
Username: IPC User Name
Password: IPC Password

Important. Prefix the URL with https://

Example:
Replace “eur-enterprise.inreach.garmin.com”
with “https://eur-enterprise.inreach.garmin.com”

4.3 Click Save, then Test Connection.

5. Turn on the flow back to InReach

5.1 On the flow map, click the arrow that goes from your EarthRanger site back to the InReach node (or its Configure Flow button).
5.2 In the panel that opens (Your Site → InReach), turn Sending ON. The arrow becomes solid.

Route flow map with the EarthRanger to Radios arrow enabled and the Sending toggle turned on

6. Copy the EarthRanger API Key

6.1 On the flow map, click your EarthRanger node and open the Connect → API key section.
6.2 Copy the API Key; you will use it in the next step.

7. Configure EarthRanger

7.1 Log in to the admin site.
7.2 Go to Source Providers.
7.3 Search for the source provider created for this integration (i.e., gundi_inreach_integrationid).
7.4 Enable Two-way messaging:

7.5 Click Save.

The “Source Provider” is automatically created after Gundi successfully receives data from the radios and pushes it to EarthRanger (step 2). If you don't find it, please review the Route Activity Logs for additional details.

Troubleshooting

Contact the Gundi team to confirm that the integration requirements (e.g., Garmin Professional Subscription) are met. Also, provide the list of device IMEIs.
