Exporting and Preparing EarthRanger Data

EarthRanger allows administrators and analysts to extract valuable data such as subject tracks, sensor observations, and event logs for further analysis, visualization, and reporting. Whether you're building conservation reports, investigating field patterns, or importing data into GIS tools like QGIS or ArcGIS, selecting the right export method ensures accuracy and efficiency.

This article provides a guided overview of your export options and explains when and how to use them.

What Types of Data Can Be Exported?

Data Type Description
Subject Track Data GPS tracking points associated with a specific subject (e.g., elephant collar)
Observations Raw location or sensor data readings, typically used for behavioral or mobility analysis
Events Logged incidents or activities—such as patrol reports, wildlife encounters, or system alerts

Format Compatibility Tips

  • CSV files can be opened in Excel or imported into GIS software.
  • KMZ files include network links for real-time data in Google Earth, but are not supported in QGIS.
  • To prepare data for QGIS, you may need to split coordinates into Latitude and Longitude columns. See tips in Exporting Observations.
  • If your data export only includes Source IDs and not Subject Names, cross-reference it with the Subject Summary export for clarity.

Export Limits and Best Practices

  • For large datasets (over 100 observations), always use the “Select All Observations” option during export.
  • Exclude erroneous or offset points before final analysis by flagging them in the Admin > Observations table.
  • Secure all exported data in accordance with your organization’s privacy and access policies.
