Receiving data from SMART Connect

Important

Connections between SMART and EarthRanger will be available through the new Gundi Portal soon. To configure your integration, kindly reach out to Gundi Support  (support@projectgundi.org) for their assistance.

Destination: EarthRanger

Description

The “SMART Connect to EarthRanger” integration automatically syncs observations recorded in SMART Connect as Events within EarthRanger.

Scope

When a query is linked to an EarthRanger Event Type, the results are transferred and stored in EarthRanger as Events. The attributes and details of these Events are determined by the data within the query results.

Supported query types include:

  • patrolobservation
  • patrolwaypoint
  • observationobservation
  • observationwaypoint
  • entityobservation
  • patrolquery

Prerequisites

EarthRanger

  • EarthRanger site URL.
  • Event Types for each relevant SMART Connect query.

SMART Connect

  • SMART Connect Server URL.
  • SMART Connect Server username and password set up for this integration.
  • List of SMART Connect queries relevant for this integration.

Configurations

1. EarthRanger

1.1 Create a Special User

  1. Log in to the admin panel in EarthRanger.
  2. Create a superuser status user (e.g., smart_to_er)

1.2 Create an authentication token

  1. Log in to the admin panel in EarthRanger.
  2. Create a long-lived token for the user created in the previous step.

1.3 Create an Event Provider

  1. Create a new Event Provider for SMART Connect.

Description: SMART Connect
User: smart_to_er
Provider: SMART Connect
URL: [Provided by the requester] (e.g., https://example.smartconservationtools.org/server)
Provider API Username: [Provided by the requester]
Provider API Password: [Provided by the requester]

2. Gundi

2.1 Log in to Gundi's previous Portal

  1. Navigate to Gundi v1.

2.2 Verify Organization

  1. Confirm that an Organization exists for this connection.

2.3 Create a New Inbound Connection

  1. Create a connection:
    1. Name: Provide an appropriate name for this connection.
    2. Organization: Select the relevant organization.
    3. Type: Choose “SMART Connect Query”.
    4. Endpoint: (e.g., https://sandbox.pamdas.org/api/v1.0)
  2. Authentication Token: Use the token linked to the smart_to_er EarthRanger user.

Limitations

Observations older than 30 days will not be processed.

The following functionalities are not supported:

  • Updates and deletions
  • Attachments
  • Movement data

The integration operates on a 30-minute cycle for collecting new SMART observations.

Next Steps

Once the configuration is complete, wait 30 minutes and perform the following actions in EarthRanger:

  1. Verify that the list of event sources accurately represents the available queries in the SMART Connect server.
  2. Map the relevant event sources with existing event types.
  3. Verify that the SMART observations are created as events in EarthRanger. Note that it may take up to 30 minutes for data to appear or for the schema to adjust. The integration operates on a 30-minute cycle for collecting new SMART observations.

Future Plans

This integration will soon be available in the new portal.
